#4 – Getting Closer

OK, little by little I’m actually learning how to properly set this thing up. I have a more appropriate picture (at least the first one), but still have a bunch of listed services that are part of the default- nothing to do with this blog. Give me a little more time and I’ll be rid of the default settings.

I don’t have my “About Me” page set up yet, so that’s another thing on the blog “to do” list. I’m still working a Monday-Friday job here in DC. Since the last post, we had a three day weekend and an inauguration (a separate story in itself), so Saturday morning I headed south for Florida in search of warmer weather and a couple of rounds of golf. My first morning in Florida the temperature was 28 degrees, while in DC it was 37. Did I head in the wrong direction? It didn’t warm up in DC, but it did in Florida and I was able to play golf in pretty comfortable weather. Also got to visit an old college friend and his wife. They are now retired, so we spent the evening talking about the transition. Now I’m jealous. They have grandkids nearby, and my friend seems a whole lot happier than the last time I saw him two plus years ago. I’ll share more about that conversation later……when I actually have somebody reading this blog.

The trip back was a little more deliberate, spending a night in Florence SC, teleworking for a day, then another night spent in Rocky Mount NC before getting home. During the drives I listened to a bunch of retirement subject podcasts, and while in NC I had a 30 minute phone conversation with another old college friend (guess I don’t have any young college friends anymore). Again, the subjects were mostly related to retirement.

Not hard to figure out what’s going through my brain these days. And there are so many related subjects- when to retire, part-time work considerations, where to retire, family, finances, travel, health, post-retirement activities, social networks, and so forth. There are a bunch of you out there who have already retired, or are approaching retirement with the same questions. I want to use this forum to open discussions on these topics and more.

One of these days I’ll have the blog set up for conversations, then I’ll try to get you folks to join in so I can get smarter before finally hitting that Retirement button.
