#24 – A Lot of Moving Parts to This Retiring

So we’re three weeks closer to retirement, three weeks closer to the new home being completed (fingers crossed), three weeks closer to moving, etc. Right now they’re all three on schedule to happen at the same time…what could go wrong? I held a meeting last week exploring some part time work options, and met earlier this week with the financial planner. Next week there are meetings with the builder, and yes, still plugging away at the full time job. But this is the fun part, I think. Right? Well, it’s exciting, at least until something goes wrong.

Just got back from a very short visit to Pensacola, including a sunset dinner with a friend at Jaco’s, where all the high-end boats are parked. Spent a night out on the beach (thanks friend), morning run on the beach, saw several old friends and just driving around familiar sites. I’ve lived in Pensacola five different times, spanning more than 27 of my 66 years here on earth. The time on the beach was amazing- perfect temperature, no clouds, very little traffic. Looking at all the beach-facing condos, thoughts kept crossing my mind of investing again in one, but then memories of hurricanes, rebuilding bridges, and weekend beach traffic brought me back to reality. Perhaps in a couple of years after Social Security and RMDs kick in…..

Pensacola’s a great place to visit, especially in the Spring or Fall, but we don’t have a yearning to move back there.

Speaking of Fall, playoff baseball is going on and that gets my interest when the Braves are playing, like this year. Will be a surprise if they go very far, but they won round one vs. the Brewers, so they’re still in it. Also love to watch college football when Navy, Auburn, or Michigan’s playing.

Going to talk about books next post, especially with more time to read soon. Interests in reading can vary so much from person to person. If you want to get a head start, let me know what you’ve read lately that got you excited. Doesn’t have to be a book. The one magazine I read non-stop is The Economist. Next post is coming in just a day or two instead in a couple of weeks.

Something different for you this post. This is a shot of the new Amazon HQ buildings under construction in Pentagon City, from our apartment balcony. That hanging frame on the far left is what the construction company uses to add altitude to a crane already in place. Cool to watch on a daily basis, but noisey!
