First time to get to the blog in a couple of weeks, lots of news to share.
First things first: put my retirement package two weeks ago. Retirement date is going to be Dec 31 this year, so now it’s barely 3.5 months to retirement. The plan was to work remotely for a year after moving down to Tennessee, but it became too easy to pull the retirement lever now. I give credit to many of you who are already retired and enjoying that life. If there’s one thing in particular that I’m looking forward to, it’s enjoying Sunday evenings and not worrying about work on Monday morning.
So what about that retirement home? Funny you should ask. We just got back from a quick visit this morning, not as much progress as we had hoped, mainly due to logistics and a slowdown of progress on houses under construction in front of us. It looks like the house will be done just before Christmas and we’ll move in right after the new year starts. Until the next change of plans. In the meantime we’re real happy with the way the house is shaping up (see the latest picture below).
Ran into another old USNA classmate today. Beth and I were walking back from dinner tonight and I heard a familiar voice almost in front of our apartment (the exact same spot where I had run into another USNA classmate 3 years earlier). I knew Joel lived close to me, but this is the first time we’ve run into each other. Joel, if you’re reading this, we need to hook up over in Pentagon Row real soon. Watch for an email.
Finally, great boys’ time last weekend. Neither my son (a Philly Eagles fan) nor I (an Atlanta Falcons fan) had been to a professional football game. So we flew down to ATL Friday evening and joined my brother (another Eagles fan) for a sports weekend. Watched a ton of college football and Braves baseball on TV Saturday before going to the the Falcons-Eagles football game at Mercedes Benz Stadium on Sunday. Something we had wanted to do for years. Was a great game if you were an Eagles fan.
Still no recent action (comments) on the blog. Now that the retirement date is set, maybe I should send out a note.
Congratulations Mike! The house looks really nice, hopefully you’ll be able to stay with your move in timeline. Our Grand #3 showed up 2 weeks ago, soccer is starting up again for #1 and work is still sprinkled in among golf and various other things. Steve Holman and I played in his member guest last month and we didn’t finish last! Maybe we can plan an outing once you get settled.

Hi Ken, good to hear from you! You broke my losing streak of comments (lack thereof), thank you. We are excited about retirement, the new house, and moving. Talked with Cos a couple weeks ago. His retirement date is Sep 30 and he’s on terminal leave right now.
Congratulations on the increase in grandchildren- we’ll be stuck on just one for the foreseeable future.
I would be glad to travel distances to play golf with old friends. Also, we have 5 great golf courses in our Tennessee neighborhood. Sometime look up Fairfield Glade TN.
Mike, congratulations on pulling the retirement trigger. Lots to look forward to.
Thank you Don. Also got a comment from Roe. A couple weeks ago I talked with Cos who’s on terminal leave, with his retirement date of Sep 30. Hope your family is doing well these days. Am guessing you two are still grandchild sitting a couple days a week. I’d like to get back down to FL again, but won’t happen until after retirement starts. As you can read, still have a number of questions about retirement, probably always will.
Joy and Gratitude. Sometimes we are fortunate enough to watch a moment when joy and gratitude come together. Even better when it is two grown men, after a long journey getting to celebrate something together. This was the scene as Atlanta Braves first basemen Freddie Freeman embraced his manager Brian Snitker after clinching the NL pennant. Two humble, loyal men enjoying this moment and it was must see TV. The only smile bigger that night? My big brother, author of this blog staying up way past his bedtime getting to enjoy the team he has rooted faithfully for over 50 years………celebrate. Now if they can just send him off into retirement as World Champions. Go Braves!!!!
Here, here, let it be as the brother wished, thanks! World Champions, and now retired…..
