I’m not sure how this post is going to come across (Of course there’s a good chance it won’t be read for a couple of months or years). It’s intended to cover many of our thoughts and preparations while transitioning to the retired life. The “Cup Runneth Over” reference is of course Biblical, coming from my pastor who I was listening to today, and as I look back over a lifetime, this is probably the best description of that lifetime despite many attempts on my part- via questionable decision making- to derail a blessed life.
Trying not to bore you, let me just run through some events over the last two weeks since my last post to make my point:
Oct 30 (AM). Probably my last round of golf while living up here, but moving into a phase of life that allows me to play golf a couple more times per week at a place with several great golf courses. Plus I can travel to all sorts of places where I’ve wanted to play, with old friends. In case you’re wondering, very little threat of shooting my age unless I’m playing golf well into my 90s. And very thankful for whoever came up with the concept of Gold Tees for seniors!
Oct 30 (PM). A great dinner with some local USNA classmates. Hopefully there will be many more of these in retirement. I will try to post a picture of these old geezers when I’m done here.
Oct 31. Spent a couple hours with wife, daughter, and granddaughter doing daytime trick or treating. Even though we’re moving from the area, we’ll be up here for several of these family events per year.
Nov 2. Got to see an old friend from my Navy days, then stayed up past midnight to watch the Braves win the World Series. Hey, if I want to stay up late to watch something and not suffer through work the next day….!
Nov 6. Visited my parents for a few hours, only to find out they’ve changed their mind and are sticking with independent living status until something forces them into assisted living. I’m starting to see where my propensity for making questionable decisions originated.
Nov 7. Our wedding anniversary. Starting next year, we get to choose when, where, and how without worrying about the impact of the next day.
Nov 11. Veteran’s Day. I firmly believe holidays will take on a greater meaning for us with time to reflect on their meaning, rather than looking at them as a day off.
So I can sense a different attitude coming across, and yes, focusing in on just the good stuff right now. I’m good with that!
