Almost exactly a year ago my USNA classmate Brian sent me a link to an article on some characteristics related to aging brains. It’s content is worthy of being the subject of my first repost, so the link is provided below:
The article uses plenty of common sense as reference for its content, but there are several links to related studies if you want to take some time to dig deeper. Should come as no surprise that healthy diets and physical activity (moderate exercise) positively impact cognitive functions, more so as we get older.
Staying socially and mentally engaged after retirement appears to effectively reduce the rate of “mental decline” when aging.
Things that impair the vascular system will increase the mental decline.
The article also has a clear message on all those supplements claiming to improve memory or mental capacity- there’s no evidence that any of them work, no matter what your age.
Perhaps more important to us, the article doesn’t give much insight into what causes dementia- because the medical community is still wrestling with understanding this mental condition. This is my biggest concern WRT reduced mental capacity as we age. How do I fight the onset of this devastating condition as I get older?
There are plenty of references on dementia. I’d be very interested in reading any references you might have on that subject.
