#36 – Anybody Up for a Trip?

So I’m looking out my home office window at five inches of snow we got last night, even though yesterday afternoon temperatures were in the 60s and it was nice enough to play golf. The snow, with a cloudless blue sky background, is beautiful, but it’s time we move onto some good Spring weather. I have my tee time for next Thursday afternoon…..

Revisiting a subject from last year: been thinking a good bit about retirement travel over the past two months. Had some encouraging travel conversations with some of you as well:

  • Last month my son went on a cruise with his Auburn college friends, had a great time. I tried to talk my wife into a cruise last month, but no-go. Need to get a little further away from the pandemic environment. OK, makes sense.
  • A couple of our new neighbors did the snowbird thing and spent February down in south Florida playing golf (maybe in a couple of years).
  • My Boston-based brother is halfway through a seven week road trip south (SC, GA, FL) and west (TX). My other brother and I talked earlier about another baseball spring training trip to FL in March…..oh well, at least MLB got through the lockout and there’s big league baseball in the near future.
  • One friend and his wife are anxious to travel to Australia, a trip they’ve put off for two years due to the pandemic and Australia’s lockdown. Another friend and his wife are anxious to travel to Japan to see their son, daughter-in-law, and grandchild.
  • Now that I’ve retired from the FAA, they’re starting to travel too. My replacement’s traveling to Amsterdam and Florida on drone business pretty soon.

It’s going to be interesting to see whether the Russia-Ukraine war makes the cost of travel almost prohibitive. And not just the cost of travel, but other potential impacts the war may have that could reach all corners of the globe.

I would love to take a road trip, or train trip, out west. Maybe just make short annual trips out there visiting various parts- Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Idaho, Montana, etc. There’s a trip to the Holy Land somewhere in my future. Cruises are still a favorite pastime. And there’s always Hawaii.

Last year I asked a few questions about favorite trips from the past or plans for future trips. Would like to hear from you folks again if you’re willing to share!

  1. Mike,
One thing about plans, they are subject to change or modification. Still planning an extensive trip to Australia, but it will now include a stop in Bahrain to visit our youngest son and family who receive orders there (2 year tour). Wasn’t expecting that, but now we can narrow the dates for the Australia trip as well. After that, it will be cruises or stateside (see the country).

    1. Don,
Here’s where my ability to recall conversations fails me. One son (Brian or Matt) is just coming back from Bahrain, correct (via Germany)? So now the other son plus family are headed for Bahrain, presumably around summertime? That will certainly be an enriching experience for the family, but I’m sure Grandma and Grandpa aren’t too crazy about “enriching” experiences that take the family away for two years. I hope the time goes by quickly for them (except when you two are visiting).
Glad to see the Australia trip is still in the near future, but my concern is…….who’s going to watch Willow while you’re gone?? As far as our travel plans, Beth doesn’t seem to be in any hurry to travel at all unless it’s to Ann Arbor to see the son or DC to see the granddaughter. We’re still waiting for the weather to turn more positive here (where it snowed this past Friday morning).
