I love a road trip. Just got back Sunday and will be taking off on another short one tomorrow AM. Will get back to retirement subjects on the next post, but then again, road trips are one of my fun retirement adventures.
This was a five-day, multi-purpose solo trip up north. For some, these details can be boring, but here they are anyway….
- Left early last Tuesday for SE Maryland to see the granddaughter, daughter, and son-in-law, crossing through the center of TN and VA. Ran into a fair amount of traffic and got to their home after 11+ hours on the road. Still able to squeeze in some fishing, painting, watching Paw Patrol and teaching them how to fly their new drone. Those activities were more fun than the driving.
- Left Wednesday morning for SE Pennsylvania, getting to Harrisburg 3 hours later, had lunch with two of my cousins who I’d not seen in more than three years, then another hour’s drive to visit my parents. They’re still hanging in there, both 90+. If you’ve read other posts here, you know I tried to get up to see them monthly while we lived in DC, but now it’s more like quarterly. They love to play Scrabble, so that’s what we did.
- Slept in a bit the next day, went on a short run through Hanover PA, and stuck around for lunch with the parents, then headed south to DC and caught up with my former FAA office mates near their L’Enfant Plaza office. Several of them go into the office on Thursdays now. I do miss engaging with them. Also told my former boss I might be interested in doing some part time work for them. Left about 7 PM to get up the road a few hours towards NJ for Friday’s event, staying in a Bel Air MD hotel Thursday night.
- Friday morning drove the 2 hours to Moorestown NJ for a quick drive by our old home when I was in high school. Lot of good memories. Continued another hour north to Hightstown NJ where I went to Peddie Prep School. This was the main purpose of the road trip- first live reunion in three years. A few years ago I reached out to a couple of Peddie classmates I had not seen in 40+ years, and we’ve been playing together in the annual reunion golf tournament ever since. After the golf tournament and a reception with several others, I headed back down and spent the night again in Bel Air MD. Skipped the reunion events Saturday since I had to get all the way back to TN by Saturday evening.
- Got up early Saturday AM and started the 11 hour drive past Baltimore, DC, through VA, and into TN, getting home about 4 PM (Central Time Zone). That one wore me out, but I had to get back so I could leave Sunday morning for Atlanta to pick up our son. That was an easy 3.5 hour trip through the TN back roads, then back home with Andrew.
- So after three days of Andrew being with us, he and I will leave tomorrow and head back to ATL where I’ll drop him off at the airport and catch up with some other old friends in Marietta before attending the Braves baseball game that night, then driving back to TN the next morning.
Wonder when/where the next road trip will be?
