#50 – A Full Week

Well here it is, post #50! If you were expecting a special subject or a major announcement, am afraid I’m going to disappoint you, my apologies. If I get to 100 posts, I’ll plan ahead better and perhaps come up with something worth celebrating. Maybe I’ll have five regular readers by then!

Last weekend I was in the middle of another very short trip up north, mainly to attend my Aunt Jean’s memorial service in Maryland. She was 90. Visiting Aunt Jean and our cousins Bob and Scott was always a pleasant experience. Since my Dad was in the Navy, we were always moving around, so throughout my lifetime, getting to see Aunt Jean’s family was a brief, annual event. They spent most of their time around Bel Air MD where she taught for 35 years.

The memorial service also meant a brief family reunion with my parents and brothers, our first such gathering since 2019. They’re always very short, but very meaningful.

There were a couple of unique happenings this week:

  • I’ve taken on a part time job as a starter/marshal at one of the community’s golf courses, and will begin in another week or so- only two days a week, but they’re full days, and they come with some good benefits. This will significantly reduce that negative cash flow for a few months (job goes through November, then starting up again the following March). It’ll also cut into my flexibility for hopping into the car and travelling for more than a few days.
  • Wednesday we had our monthly USNA Alumni Association luncheon for the Knoxville Chapter. This was my third one since getting down here, and we had four classmates attending from 1978- good to see Rudy, Shawn, and Ken. Lunch attendance is usually 15-25 total, and we get to hear the latest rumors (and more often the associated true stories) from Annapolis. Very much appreciate the people who run these groups. Average age was probably 70 (sigh).
  • Thursday I broke down and took a much needed golf lesson. The golf professional fixed my main problem in about five minutes. I’ve been averaging scores right about 90 since starting to play down here this year. The next day I went out and shot a 78 (in golf, the lower the score, the better). 🙂 This coming week we’ll see if the lesson sticks.

So that’s it for this post. Next post will get the subject back to retirement subjects.
